Hamilton, Ont. – October 17, 2023 – UFCW Canada activists from across the country gathered in Hamilton, Ontario to participate in the 2023 New Democratic Party convention. UFCW Canada activists represented one of the largest contingents at the convention.
The convention focused on how the party can strengthen the progressive movement and build the campaign to win the next federal election and was the first in-person meeting of NDP members to be held in five years.
Throughout the three-day event over 1,100 delegates passed several resolutions dedicated to building a better Canada for workers and their families, including a UFCW Canada-backed resolution aimed at strengthening labour rights of temporary foreign workers.
Activists also heard from a number of guest speakers including Canadian Labour Congress President and longtime UFCW Local 832 activist Bea Bruske; David Eby, NDP Premier of British Columbia; Olivia Chow, Mayor of Toronto; Marit Stiles, Leader of Ontario’s NDP; Senator Bernie Sanders, and newly-elected NDP Premier of Manitoba Wab Kinew by video, and more.
UFCW Canada delegates were active on the convention floor joining discussions on pressing matters including the affordability crisis, anti-scab legislation, and strengthening laws to make joining a union easier.
The next federal NDP convention is scheduled for 2025.
