Hamilton, Ont. – July 26, 2022 – Workers at Darling International’s processing plant recently voted to join UFCW Local 1006A, weeks after members in the company’s fleet division also opted for unionization.
The bargaining unit is comprised of 45 workers, meaning a total of 115 workers at Darling International are now represented by the Local Union.
“I am thrilled to congratulate and welcome the new members from Darling International,” says UFCW 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “Joining a union is the best way to make your workplace better, as it can help you improve your wages, benefits, and working conditions. We are excited to work with the newest members at Darling on the next step of negotiating a fair union contract,” Hanley adds.
The members at Darling’s Hamilton-based processing plant work in a variety of roles, including millwright, utility relief operator, grease operator, receiving operator, utility yard operator, tallow operator, control room operator, plant service, milling operator, electrician, and electrician apprentice.
Key issues during the organizing campaign included scheduling, respect at work, and health and safety concerns.
“This is an inspiring victory for the workers at Darling International, who showed tremendous determination, commitment, and support for each other throughout the unionization process,” says Lesley Prince, UFCW 1006A Organizing Director.
