Toronto – November 18, 2021 – Hospitality workers at Steamworks Baths are the latest to join UFCW 1006A after a successful conclusion of their organizing campaign, which saw a majority of the 23-worker bargaining unit vote yes.
“We are pleased to welcome the newest members from Steamworks Baths to our union family,” says UFCW 1006A President Wayne Hanley. “This victory is a testament to their unity and determination to build a better workplace. Our local union has a proud history of supporting the 2SLGBTQi community and we are proud to welcome these newest members.”
The new members work in a variety of roles including: housekeeping, clerk, lead clerk, and maintenance assistant and organized around health and safety concerns, working conditions, and to have a voice at work.
“I know how hard we work and I know that none of us deserve to take home anything less than a living wage,” says Graeme Lamb, Steamworks Baths worker. “A lot of us were motivated to join the union because we want impartial scheduling, transparent discipline, health and safety measures, and a predictable pay grid. Workers should never be afraid to demand fair treatment, even during a pandemic.”
