Winnipeg – April 21, 2022 – Over 1,700 UFCW 832 members working across 18 Safeway locations in Manitoba recently ratified a new five-year collective agreement that makes them the highest-paid unionized retail workers in the province.
“Our bargaining team worked hard to represent members concerns in this round of bargaining,” says UFCW 832 President Jeff Traeger. “While we believe members deserve more after two years working on the front lines of the pandemic, this agreement includes wage and benefit improvements that are above-and-beyond in comparison to other unionized retail grocery workers.”
Members prevailed with a strong collective agreement after giving their bargaining committee a 98 percent strike mandate, which sent a concerted message to their employer to do better at the bargaining table.
In addition to wage and benefit increases, the new agreement also addresses scheduling and health and safety issues brought on by the pandemic.
