Toronto – May 6, 2024 – UFCW Canada’s national executive board recently convened for its bi-annual meeting, the first led by new National President Shawn Haggerty. Comprised of UFCW leaders and representatives from across the country, the UFCW Canada National Council meets in person twice a year to assess the state of the union, help decide on approaches to continue to empower members, and develop plans for helping more workers gain the UFCW advantage in their workplace.
As part of the meeting, council members heard from UFCW International President Marc Perrone, who gave an update on the state of the union and underscored the need for continued support of labour-friendly political parties in every election in the U.S. and Canada.
Council members also heard from International Secretary-Treasurer Milton Jones, who spoke about the continued growth of the UFCW internationally and the pivotal role our union plays in amplifying worker’s voices and bargaining power.
As well, the council members reviewed activity from UFCW Canada’s core committees on workplace right, women and gender equity, young workers, training and education, human rights, equity and diversity, and political action. The council also examined recent campaign developments and emerging technologies for organizing drives.
