Although it has not yet been formally announced, Loblaws will be paying a bonus of $2 per hour to all current members in their retail banner stores and distribution centre who are actively working.
This is in recognition of the incredible job retail food and distribution centre members have been doing in the face of the coronavirus disease, COVID-19.
The hourly bonus is retroactive to March 8 and runs until April 30, where it will be further reviewed, and applies to members who were on staff as of the March 8 date.
Members were told of the plan at store "huddles" Saturday morning.
‘We’ve been saying it all along that our members are at the very front lines in dealing with the public's reaction to the coronavirus,” says Suzanne Hodge, President of UFCW Local 247.
“We certainly appreciate the Company’s recognition of this effort," says Hodge, "and just as important are the many other changes being made to ensure our members are provided a safe work environment.”
The past few days have seen various announcements from Loblaws and many other food retailers regarding new measures being taken to deal with the large crowds, and recognizing the need for social distancing.
Reduced store hours, designated shopping hours for seniors and employees, the plan for installing plexiglass shields in front of checkout counters, and social distancing measures are among the measures that are necessary to deal with the uncertainty and anxiety of shoppers and workers.
UFCW Local 247 members are encouraged to regularly check the union's website and UFCW 247 Facebook page for the latest updates and news.
