Multiple Safeway locations to Move from Appendix B

UFCW 247 and Sobeys are pleased to announce that they have made an agreement that will see multiple Safeway locations move from Appendix B stores to Appendix A stores before the one-year timeline outlined in Arbitrator John Halls Award. The parties have agreed that the following schedule will be in place for the stores to come off Appendix B:

Wave 1 – Store 4966 (Broadway and Commercial), Store 4968 (Sardis) and Store 4912 (Langley Fraser Crossing) will move out of Appendix B effective May 2, 2021.

Wave 2– Store 4946 (Terrace), 4936 (Shaughnessy), Store 4913 (Kensington), Store 4911 (Burnaby Heights), Store 4909 (Caufield), will move out of Appendix B effective July 4, 2021.

Wave 3 – Store 4917 (McBride), Store 4974 (Cranbrook), Store 4960 (Kelowna), Store 4916 (Fortune Kamloops), 4908 (Robson), Store 4914 (Peninsula Village), Store 4919 (Vernon Square), Store 4958 (Parkgate Village), Store 4901 (West Broadway) and Store 4905 (Westview) will move out of Appendix B effective September 5, 2021.

Under the Award “Should a store covered by Appendix B maintain profitability for one year, either party can apply to revert to Appendix A”. This means we could apply in August, do a financial review, and possibly return stores in September. The Company could challenge the numbers and process, as they attempted to do with Local 1518, and delay the process for months. Under this agreement we are agreeing that these stores will be moved off Appendix B without the need to meet.

As a result, members at these stores will have the following reinstated:

  • Article 5.19 – Accumulated Paid Time Off (A.T.O.)
  • Article 6 – Grid A P/T rates of pay
  • Article 9.08 (8) – Full Production Clerk Benefits Contributions

The stores listed in this document shall continue to apply the following Appendix B conditions until March 31, 2023:

A)     full time Grid A employees who have taken the ATO buy out shall continue to be entitled to elect to work a 36-hour work week one time per calendar year, in the first week of January, for each year remaining in the term of the Collective Agreement.

B)    Article 8.05 – Health, Safety and Education Fund Contributions

Through the discussions on the Appendix B stores, the Union and Company have also agreed to collaborate on an “in-house” Meat Cutter Training Program. You can read the story on that program on the UFCW 247 site.

“From the first day the Award came into effect we have been having dialogue with Sobeys to see if there was any way to have stores move from Appendix B sooner and combining it with training for our members makes perfect sense,” said UFCW 247 Secretary Treasurer Dan Goodman.
