Toronto – September 18, 2024 – September 18 is International Equal Pay Day, acknowledge the continuing fight to achieve equal pay for work of equal value.
Women have historically faced significant barriers to achieving economic equality, including gender-based discrimination in hiring, promotion, and pay. While progress has been made in recent years, the gender pay gap remains persistently high.
Key numbers:
- 70 cents: what women make for every dollar men make
- 16%: percentage of women and gender diverse people with a physical disability who report being fairly paid compared to their peers
- 169 years: to close the economic gender gap worldwide at current trends
Many measures in concert can help end the gender pay gap, including: enforced pay equity legislation across sectors and workplaces, increasing the minimum wage, and universal childcare
