Your Union’s Retail Negotiating Committee met with the Company’s committee on May 30th and 31st.
Discussions ensued and it was strongly reiterated to the Company that their last offer was not enough, and that the membership has issued a strong 97 percent strike mandate. The Company presented different options which your committee felt did not reflect enough movement and therefore there is nothing to bring back to the members.
As we have done in past negotiations, we’ve asked to meet with Loblaw officials from their Brampton head office to push this situation along. They have agreed and we are looking at confirming a meeting date as soon as possible.
To assist your Union in this stalemate, we reached out to UFCW National President Paul Meinema and asked for his participation in the meeting with Loblaw senior officials.
“We are in the process of scheduling a meeting with Loblaw’s Senior Management, President Meinema, Charles and myself to see if we can jumpstart our talks. The last two days made it clear we need to speak directly to the Company officials who will make the decisions on movement to either a deal or a dispute, and involving Paul impresses upon Loblaw the gravity of the situation”, said President Dan Goodman.
“It’s not unusual for us to involve our National office in these types of situations. Paul deals with these Companies at their highest levels and if we can use that to our advantage we should”, said Secretary Treasurer Pratt.
“As always the National Office is happy to support the Local by any means necessary either at the bargaining table or with resources on the picket line” commented Meinema.
We will continue to post updates as we have them.
