Your Vote Matters This Federal Election

Ottawa – April 17, 2025 – The 2025 federal election is just around the corner, taking place on Monday, April 28. This vote will shape the future of our country — and for UFCW Canada members and working families across the country, it’s one of the most important elections of our time.

Today, voting feels like a given. But it wasn’t always this way. Generations of Canadians fought tirelessly — through advocacy, protest, and legal challenges — to ensure that every citizen over the age of 18 has the right to vote. Their efforts gave us the democratic rights we enjoy today. Now, it’s up to us to protect and strengthen what they fought for.

As we watch democratic norms challenged around the world, especially south of the border, we are reminded that our rights are not guaranteed. They must be defended, every election. Participating in the democratic process is not just a right — it’s a responsibility.

This election is about much more than political parties or slogans. It’s about issues that directly affect our daily lives — especially for working families. UFCW members across Canada have spoken out about what matters most, and here’s what they’ve said:

  • Affordable housing: We need action to make housing more accessible and secure for all families.
  • Rising cost of living: Essentials like gas and rent are getting harder to afford. It’s time for real solutions.
  • Healthcare: Strengthening and protecting our universal healthcare system is non-negotiable.
  • Good, well-paying jobs: Let’s grow the economy with jobs that support families — not just profits for the few.
  • Childcare: Access to affordable childcare is critical for working parents.
  • Trade and affordability: Smarter trade policies can lower costs for everyday goods.

For young workers, your vote is crucial.

If you’re a young worker and voting for the first time, your participation is more important than ever. Young voters have the power to swing elections — and yet, they are often the most underrepresented at the polls. Your future is on the line: from housing affordability to the climate crisis, the decisions made in this election will impact your life for decades.

Don’t let misinformation — especially online — distract or discourage you. Be vigilant. As Canada’s Foreign Interference Commission warns, information manipulation is the biggest threat to our democracy. Always seek out trusted sources.

UFCW Canada has prepared a federal election resource that highlights where the major parties stand on the key priorities of UFCW Canada members.

On April 28, stand up for yourself, your community, and your future. Let’s vote for a government that truly supports working families — and builds a more secure, affordable, and fair Canada for all.
