UFCW Young-Workers Internship Program takes over the Prairies

Winnipeg – June 29, 2024 – The latest session of the renowned UFCW Canada Young-Workers Internship Program was recently held in Winnipeg, bringing together participants from across Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a week of dynamic training and learning.

The latest stop on the YIP tour brought together members from UFCW Canada Locals 832, 1400 and 248P to learn and build new skills to become better activists in their workplaces and communities.

“YIP has opened up my mind to new things including the importance of politics in our general lives and how it impacts all working people in our country,” says UFCW Local 248P member Shawn Marjoram. “I would recommend this program to any young worker wanting to expand their knowledge and further their understanding of unions and our country. I am extremely grateful for this experience.”

Throughout the program, participants delved into diverse topics such as labour history, deepening their understanding of Canada’s worker movement. The highlight of the week was an engaging simulated bargaining session, during which participants took on dual roles as employer and workers and their unions, negotiating towards a collective agreement.

Each year, YIP engages dozens of young member-activists from across Canada. The next session of this ground-breaking program takes place in British Columbia. To learn more about YIP, click here. You can also follow the program on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
