New Westminster, B.C. – The 2023 Young-workers Internship Program (YIP) continued its summer-long sessions with a stop in New Westminster bringing together young members from across B.C. and Alberta.
Members shared their unique insights as young workers in retail and industrial sectors, and gained knowledge by exploring sessions on union stewardship, collective bargaining and lobbying.
The young workers highlighted the changes needed to reverse course on climate change, precarious work and food insecurity.
Members were also treated to a visit from UFCW 1518 President Kim Novak who shared her journey from rank-and-file member to local union president and the many opportunities available to young members who want to kickstart their activism.
The session concluded with discussions on media literacy before members were given their certificates for successful completion of the program. YIP concludes its summer programming with its franco-phone installment for Quebec members in the coming weeks.
