Union Questions Loblaw Over "Gatekeeper" Cart Wheel Lock Program

Last week in negotiations your Union Negotiating Committee raised concerns over a new Asset Protection program, code name:"Gatekeeper", that Loblaw has introduced on a trial basis at a limited number of Superstores in BC.

It is based on a system that locks a customer's cart wheels prior to leaving the store if they have not gone through a till. We received calls from customer service members who were being told they would be the first point of contact with these customers and had concerns over being placed in a security role outside their normal duties.

We have reached out to our legal counsel and asked for an opinion on the way the Company has structured the trial and the impact on UFCW 247 members. We are continuing to have dialogue with the Company and will post updates as we gather more information.
